Hurricane Season Travel Insurance: Protecting Your Trip from Severe Weather

Booking a vacation during hurricane season can offer great deals, but it also carries the risk of severe weather disrupting your plans. If you are traveling from South Florida or heading to a tropical destination, understanding how your travel insurance handles storms is critical.

Below is a detailed breakdown of how our two primary carriers—Allianz Travel and Atlas Travel (WorldTrips)—handle coverage for trip cancellations, interruptions, and delays caused by hurricanes and natural disasters.

Allianz Travel Insurance (Jefferson Insurance Company)

Allianz explicitly defines severe weather to include hazardous conditions like hurricanes, windstorms, and rainstorms. A natural disaster is defined as a large-scale extreme weather event, which includes hurricanes and floods, that damages property or disrupts transportation.

Here is how an Allianz policy protects you during a severe storm:

  • Trip Cancellation & Interruption due to Uninhabitable Conditions: You are covered if your primary residence or your travel destination becomes uninhabitable due to a natural disaster.

  • Mandatory Evacuations: If government authorities order a mandatory evacuation at your destination due to a natural disaster, your trip cancellation or interruption coverage can apply. For trip cancellation, the evacuation order must be in effect within 24 hours prior to your departure date. For this coverage to be valid, you must have purchased your policy prior to public knowledge of the event leading to the mandatory evacuation.

  • Travel Carrier Delays: If your travel carrier cannot get you to your originally scheduled destination for at least 24 consecutive hours due to severe weather or a natural disaster, this is considered a covered reason to cancel or interrupt your trip.

  • Missing 50% of Your Trip: If you miss at least 50% of the total length of your trip because a natural disaster occurs, or because roads are closed or impassable due to severe weather, your trip interruption coverage can apply.

  • Important Hurricane Exclusion (The "Named Storm" Rule): Allianz policies do not cover any loss, condition, or event that was known, foreseeable, intended, or expected when the policy was purchased. This means you are not covered if you buy the policy on or after the date the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) names or identifies the meteorological storm.

Atlas Travel Medical Insurance (WorldTrips)

Atlas handles storm coverage differently, heavily focusing on medical emergencies, evacuations, and highly specific weather deviations rather than broad cancellation coverage.

Here is how an Atlas policy handles natural disasters and severe weather:

  • The Definition of a Natural Disaster: Atlas defines a natural disaster as an event of natural cause—including wind or rain—that results in widespread and severe damage.

  • The "Named Storm" Exception: Under an Atlas policy, a natural disaster explicitly does not include the direct or indirect effects of rain, wind, or water associated with named storms meeting the definition of a hurricane or typhoon.

  • When a Hurricane IS Covered: There are two strict exceptions where a named hurricane becomes a covered event under the policy. You are covered if the path of the named storm deviates by a distance of greater than 200 miles within a 72-hour period from the path forecasted by a nationally recognized meteorological service. You are also covered if there is less than 72 hours of advance notice of a potential landfall for the named storm.

  • Replacement Accommodations: If your storm meets the exception criteria above, the policy can cover replacement accommodations if you are displaced from planned paid accommodations due to an evacuation from a forecasted natural disaster or following a natural disaster strike. This benefit provides up to $250 a day for a maximum of 5 days.

  • Trip Interruption Coverage for Home Damage: If you have already departed from your home country, the policy provides Trip Interruption coverage if you provide written proof that more than 40% of your principal residence was destroyed by weather. This benefit covers the cost of an economy one-way air or ground transportation ticket for you to return home.

Disclaimer: The information provided on this page regarding hurricane, natural disaster, and severe weather coverage is a brief summary for general educational purposes only and does not constitute a guarantee of coverage or legally binding insurance advice. All travel insurance claims, approvals, and denials are strictly governed by the specific terms, conditions, definitions, limitations, and exclusions found in the official policy documents issued by the respective carriers (Jefferson Insurance Company for Allianz Travel, and WorldTrips for Atlas Travel). Please be aware that purchasing a travel insurance policy after a tropical storm or hurricane is named by meteorological authorities, or otherwise becomes a known and foreseeable event, will generally exclude you from coverage related to that specific storm. Always review your actual plan documents carefully. For questions about how a specific policy applies to your upcoming trip, please contact the licensed brokers at Healthy Florida Travel.
